Sustainably Sourced Decorative Objects Debuts for Summer Gift Giving

New York, May 18, 2018—Orange HOWELL’s Oysters “Rockefeller” is a delightful celebration of nature’s beauty and uniqueness, fused with humanity’s voracious appetite for precious gold. The concept was birthed at Zadie’s Oyster Room, an elegant East Village hideaway, where the mollusks’ rustic appeal was noted and compared to the personalities and foibles of individuals in our diverse democratic society…however politically polarized it may be.

A few months later decorative artist and Orange HOWELL founder Paula Zanger acquired fine gilding techniques at Alpha Workshops, under the tutelage of the illustrious creator and instructor Carol Cannon. By fusing this ornamental technique with the bivalve’s oceanic appeal—and epicurean urbanity—the Oysters “Rockefeller” Collection was born. Discarded leavings are transformed, and Mother Nature accentuated with repurposed beauty.

The Collection is reminiscent of Portuguese Manueline architecture, marking the transition from the Late Gothic to the Renaissance periods. Orange HOWELL’s style reinterprets iconic motifs as codified luxury and beautifies the quotidian, aiming to instill a relevant perspective. Yet Oysters “Rockefeller” Collection is relevant to today’s “Trumponian” atmosphere, indeed gilding the refuse and donating a percentage of online sales to Billion Oyster Project. The expansive art collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller commanded record-breaking sums at Christie’s auction house just a few days ago, with estate proceeds benefitting culinary foundation Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, and conservation organization Main Coast Heritage Trust, among others.

Orange HOWELL is a design entity and maker of beautiful things. Formally founded in April 2009, items have sold to Neiman Marcus, abc home, The Ritz-Carlton, Brooks Brothers, and Wynn Las Vegas, among others. Select pieces are available at orangehowell.com. Designed in New York City’s East Village, they are handmade in Manhattan and New England. Orange Howell is named for the founder’s great-great grandfather, a Welsh, Quaker, Hoosier, Farmer who was truly the “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.”
